Out of all of the things in your house, you would think that your toothbrush is the least intriguing item. Actually, the toothbrush has a unique history.

People have been concerned about dental health since the dawn of humanity. That toothbrush hanging in your bathroom dates back about 5,000 years. Well, not that actual toothbrush, but the concept has been around for a while. Ancient people used to use a stick with a frayed end to scrub their teeth. As technology developed, people began to use toothbrushes made out of wood and bone. Soft bristles are best for your teeth, but for many years people added animal hair for the bristles.

You should change your toothbrush every three months. That is pretty easy since you can find toothbrushes in almost any store. But, toothbrushes weren’t mass-produced until 1770 in England. That’s when a man named William Addis, who happened to be doing jail time saw the other prisoners putting soot or salt on a rag and cleaning their teeth. Using a bone and some bristles he got from a guard,he created a toothbrush. When he was a free man again, Addis would start his own company called Wisdom Toothbrushes. It is still in business.

Today we are fortunate that we don’t have to chew on a stick or shove animal hair into our mouths to clean our teeth. Toothbrushes are available in most stores. But remember that brushing, while extremely important is only part of the process. A major component of dental health is keeping your routine appointments with your dentist. If you would like to schedule a visit with our dentist, Dr. [doctor_name] at [practice_name] in [city], [state] call [phone] today. You can have a professional cleaning and exam, and there won’t be a stick in sight.
